International Gaming Technology, Inc. introduced a new revolutionary concept of traditional video poker slot game, with an added element of competition against others that gives players a shot at winning some big pots of money. This is why IGT called this video poker machine “Opponent Poker.” This is how the game is played; first, the slot player picks his favorite video poker game by touching the screen of Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Bonus Poker Deluxe, or Double Double Bonus Poker. Second, the slot player then chooses two opponents out of six to pay against. These six opponents are named; Kimi, Mike, Bob, Henry, Keffie, and John, who are cartoonish/animated opponents having distinct characteristics. The slot player must play maximum credits for the initial bet. Then slot player and the two chosen opponents are dealt with the same exact cards. The slot player then uses his own video poker strategy to hold any selected cards and to make an additional bonus bet of another five credits, for a total of ten credits. At the same time, the opponents also hold the best possible cards that have the best odds in winning. The slot player gets to look at the opponents hand and see which cards they are holding and may choose to hold the same or a different set of cards. The slot player and the opponents then receive the replacement of the discarded cards each from an independent full deck of cards less the five initial dealt cards. When the slot player wins the hand, the win is based on that paytable, just like the traditional video poker. If the slot player’s winning hand is better than those of the opponents’ winning hands, the slot player wins and takes their winning also. When the player and one or both of the opponents have a tie poker hand, for instance, both having Jacks or Better each, the winnings go into a pot and build with each tie hand until someone wins the pot with a hand superior to the others.

If the bonus pot is positive before a new hand is dealt, the player may opt to be awarded exactly one-third of the bonus pot rounded down and have the bonus pot reset to zero. If either opponent has a hand greater than both the other opponent’s hand and the player’s hand, the player is awarded the credit value of his hand only and the bonus pot is reset to zero. If both of the opponents’ or the player shares the highest hand value, the credit value of all three hands is added to the bonus pot meter and the player is awarded the credit value of his hand. If at any time the bonus pot value exceeds 800 times the bonus bet, the player will automatically be awarded one-third of the bonus pot rounded down and the bonus pot will reset to zero.

There are two things that make this game unbelievably fun; one, is that the slot player gets to choose two of six different opponents. The opponents all act differently when they win or lose, exhibiting funny and hilarious behavior acts, celebrating when they win and sulking when they lose. Secondly, is that the opponents play an auto-hold strategy based on the best odds that the slot player always gets to see. When the pot grows larger, the opponents continue to play the best odds, but the slot player may choose to change strategy to make the game very interesting and challenging! So ante up and watch your slot players revel in the fun social interaction of the “Opponent Poker” video game.
